Thermowells

Our thermowells are the ideal accessory for temperature sensors that are used in liquids, gases or pipes. They protect the sensor from mechanical influences, facilitate maintenance and enable quick replacement without having to interrupt the process.
Available in various lengths, diameters and materials (e.g. stainless steel, brass), they are perfectly matched to our temperature sensors - whether for HVAC systems, industrial processes or special applications. Threaded connections, weld-in variants and flange versions offer maximum flexibility during installation.

High-quality thermowells ensure long-lasting, reliable and service-friendly temperature measurement.

Why does a thermowell make technical sense?

In pressurized or flow-loaded applications, the thermowell takes on the mechanical and chemical load of the process - the temperature sensor measures protected inside.
It therefore has a direct influence:

  • the long-term reliability of the measuring point
  • the stability under the influence of flow
  • the Pressure- and tightness safety
  • ease of maintenance during operation

The thermowell is permanently connected to the process (e.g. via a thread, weld-in socket or flange). The sensor is inserted into the sleeve and thermally coupled - without direct contact with the medium. A correctly designed thermowell therefore not only improves the service life, but also the control quality of the entire system.

Typical designs

Different variants are used depending on the application:

Threaded immersion sleeves

  • Frequently used in HVAC systems
  • Simple assembly
  • Ideal for heating and cooling circuits

Weld-in immersion sleeves

  • Permanently tight solution
  • for higher pressure requirements
  • industrial applications

Flange immersion sleeves

  • for larger nominal diameters
  • for higher process pressures
  • Maintenance possible without opening the process

Choice of material: Brass or stainless steel?

HVAC applications often use nickel-plated Brass immersion sleeves are used.

You are bidding:

  • Good thermal conductivity
  • Simple processing
  • Economical solution for standard applications

For higher requirements - especially for:

  • higher temperatures
  • chemically demanding media
  • Increased corrosion load

recommended Stainless steel (e.g. 1.4571 / AISI 316Ti).

Stainless steel-immersion sleeves:

  • Higher mechanical strength
  • Better corrosion resistance
  • Higher permissible flow velocities

The choice of material is therefore not just a price decision, but a question of Pressure, temperature, medium and mechanical load.

Dimensioning: length, diameter & installation situation

An incorrectly dimensioned thermowell can lead to sluggish measurement or even mechanical problems.
Important parameters:

  • Installation length (must protrude sufficiently into the flow area)
  • Inner diameter matching the sensor
  • Wall thickness for pressure applications
  • Flow velocity in the pipe

Rule of thumb from practice:
The measuring point should be located in an area with good flow - not in marginal zones with low flow.

Approach velocity & mechanical load

A thermowell is immersed in the medium - and is permanently exposed to the flow. Depending on the flow velocity, forces are generated that lead to:

  • Vibrations
  • Material fatigue
  • premature failure
  • or even irreparable damage

can lead.
The permissible flow velocity is particularly important for district heating pipes, pump circuits, industrial applications, higher temperatures and pressures.

Why the installation length plays a role here

The longer the thermowell protrudes into the flow area, the greater the mechanical load. The maximum permissible flow velocity therefore depends directly on:

  • Installation length
  • Material (brass vs. stainless steel)
  • Temperature
  • Pressure

Our technical diagrams show these limit values in a practical way - differentiated by:

  • 1 bar / steam
  • 20 bar / water at +100 °C
  • 20 bar / water at +200 °C

Mixing section: Temperature measurement after hydraulic mergers

One point that is often overlooked in practice is the so-called mixing section.

Temperature stratification occurs when water flows of different temperatures are combined. If the sensor is installed too close to the mixing point, it will not measure the actual mixing temperature.

Rule of thumb:

Minimum 10 × pipe diameter (10 × d), maximum 15 × d distance to the mixing point.

This applies in particular to:

  • T-pieces
  • Distribution bar
  • hydraulic switches
  • Changeover valves

A correctly maintained mixing distance significantly improves the control quality - regardless of the sensor type.

Installation position: influence on measurement dynamics and service life

The installation direction also influences the behavior:

  • Installation against the direction of flow
  • Lateral installation
  • Installation in bends
  • Vertical vs. horizontal lines

In high-flow applications, the sensor should be located in the area with good flow - without getting into critical resonance lengths. Our installation diagrams show typical installation variants for:

  • Straight pipelines
  • T-pieces
  • Bows
  • Horizontal and vertical installation situations
